Could markets also play a role, maybe a critical role, in development? It is commonly believed that markets are for the rich and the government is for the poor. The course would explore making markets work for the people, and especially the poor, in a new theoretical structure and with evidence from across the developing world. It would examine how government provision of goods and services could improve by bringing markets into government. It would develop different perspectives on the nature and workings of markets, missing markets, failing markets as well as designing markets.
